The Art of Self-Care
Have You Forgotten Yourself?
Being there for others can be perceived as pleasant and motivating, or it can feel like a duty or a burden. No matter which is the case for you, be sure not to lose sight of yourself and your own needs.
The Importance of Self-Care
Self-care means valuing and treating oneself with love and care – and doing this every day. This does not mean selfishly ignoring the needs of others. Rather, self-care means making yourself and your well-being your top priority to provide you with more strength for everything else that needs to be done.
If self-care is missing in everyday life, it quickly affects our well-being and health. Those who never rest and do not listen to their bodies run the risk of exceeding their physical and mental limits.
You Take Top Priority
Those who take care of themselves are often more relaxed and happier and can pass this on to others. Therefore, it is incredibly important to take the time for things that make you feel good. Doing this can be practiced in small steps.
Creating a Foundation
Self-care starts with recognizing your own body‘s basic needs. Make sure to get enough sleep every night. Eat a balanced diet and enough drink fluids to provide your body with the strength and energy it needs. Exercise and fitness are just as essential for healthy well-being.
Step by Step to Caring for Yourself
Once the foundation has been laid, the next step in self-care is to ensure you are getting enough rest and relaxation, as well as to create beautiful moments for yourself. What brings you pleasure and joy? Which activities and/or people refill your energy reserves? How can you bring this joy into your own day-to-day life?
Consciously incorporate special time slots into your daily routine. Use these time slots, for example, to spend quality time with friends or family, pursue hobbies, read a book, go on a nature drive, or just relax on the couch. What‘s important is that you make sure to recharge your „batteries“ on a regular basis.
Incorporating Self-Care Into Everyday Life
- Begin your day by asking yourself what you are going to do that day and find your own self-value and importance in these tasks.
- Consciously take small breaks throughout the day. This can be a short walk or even making yourself a cup of tea between two work phases.
- Go within yourself and ask yourself what your needs are and what you can do to make yourself feel good. Write down your answers so that they are clearly visible to you.
- Introduce small mindfulness rituals spread out throughout your day.
Examples: consciously being aware of your breath, consciously walking, paying attention to smell and taste when eating… - Practice gratitude: Regularly reflect on which people, things, or events you are grateful for. This can, for example, be done once a week, once a day, etc. For many, it is helpful to write down their thankful moments regularly.
- At the end of the day, briefly write about your day, your activities, and how you felt doing them. This will help you become more aware of what is good for you and what is not, as well as when it is necessary to allow yourself some moments of rest.
